Male Goldfinch waiting its turn for the feeder

Get out your binoculars.  The goldfinches are back.  Many of you have already discovered these at your feeders but yesterday was the first day they arrived in my yard. Usually you will see one, then a few, then many all at once.  In my yard we have observed them at this time of year for about 3-6 weeks before they continue on their migratory routes.

Although extremely yellow and black compared to other species this time of year, Goldfinches are actually much brighter up north in summer time, almost neon. Just the same, they are a wonderful treat on cold days like today. You can see them in summer colors at http://www.wbu.com/media/videos_finch.html

Although everyone has their preferred feeding methods I stick to old fashioned thistle seed socks, available at Walmart for under $5.00. These white mesh bags come pre-filled with seed so you just bring them home and hang them about your yard.  I hang several together in the shrubbery and then add sunflower chips to my regular feeders.

I have also observed them eating the seed heads from lettuce plants, collard greens and mustards.  Just another reason to let part of your garden go wild.

So if anyone says your yard is a bit messy, just tell them you’ve gone to the birds!

Happy Day,

Trish
