A Return to transparency

Baby flounder

Baby flounder

Back in the summer on one of our boating excursions, I caught a baby flounder in my shrimp net.  It was so small that it fell right through the holes.  Scooping it up for a closer look I was amazed at its transparency. Without my hand behind it, it would have disappeared against the sand.

It reminded me of human children, how absolutely pure and transparent they are.  Unable to lie until taught to lie.  Unable to hide emotions until taught to hide them. Unable to resist affectionate acts, voicing fears or speaking simple truths.

As I get older I desire to return to such transparency. Adults call it the journey back to truth and often look upon it as a painful process filled with confession and disclosure, sacrifice and embarrassment. After all, who wants to let go of those things that have served us so well, protected us against attack, kept our families safe and our egos safer?

Yet, I believe that truth is quietly beckoning us back to transparency, its gentle voice appearing on the wind and in the ripples of the water and in the visions of our dreams.

Blessed are those who can hear it.

Happy Day,
