Noticing the ordinary

A common shorebird

So often when I take nature walks I seek out “special” sightings, exotic varieties, a new bird to add to my life list, an unusual flower. More often than not I overlook the mundane, those ordinary creatures you see everywhere, pigeons and squirrels and sandpipers.

It recently dawned on me that it’s the mundane creatures that are the most successful.  Common varieties are common for a reason.  They have prospered not because they are unique or flamboyant, but because they are consistent and predictable.

Something to ponder.  I welcome your thoughts.
