Did you know that in Ancient History, March was the beginning of the year in most cultures? Perhaps it was because in northern climates the snow finally began to melt enough to reveal the earth, with daffodils and crocuses poking their faces upward to hint of a new season of life.

For me, March marks the beginning of spring which means it’s time to start cleaning house, divesting of clutter and restoring order to my corner of the universe.

Question is, what is clutter and what is an important item I may need someday?  I believe that is the crux of the problem for most people. We fill our houses with sentimental objects that serve little purpose and when we run out of room, we purchase storage spaces so that we can make room for more stuff.

Trouble is, there’s only partial truth to the old adage “out of sight, out of mind.”  At the back of our mind we carry the weight of these objects. They become unconscious burdens that clutter the mind and weight us down mentally and emotionally.

In Feng Shui, as in many philosophies, the first step is to completely remove those things that serve no purpose.  Not stash them in the attic or in a storage facility, but divest of them completely.

Since I am the worst clutter bug, I have decided that I will give up clutter for Lent.

Anyone for a yard sale?
