Help or hindrance?
June 6, 2009 – 8:52 am
A few days ago I was weeding a wild section of my yard when I heard a funny scratching noise. Looking up I found this little blue jay struggling to balance itself on a branch in my wood pile. Keeping a safe distance, I tried not to alarm the bird nor call attention to it since my dogs were right beside me. Within a few minutes the bird had found its balance and as soon as I walked away, both parents came in tandem to feed and tend to the fledgling.
Not that long ago I would have seen this “victim” and run to the rescue. Now I know that it not only doesn’t require rescuing but that my interference would actually impede its learning process. The struggle to hide actually forces the bird to flap its wings and get stronger.
Of course, we can apply this same logic to people. Sometimes their struggle is what makes them stronger and our assistance is merely interference in the process. Kind of like getting in God’s way.
Food for thought.
Happy Day,
