What’s in a name?
July 10, 2009 – 9:16 amWhat’s in a name?
Why do we name our daughters Rose, Heather, Daisy and Myrtle but not cool flowers like Zinnia, Strelitzia or Lotus?
If we name her Rose, will she be a knock-out? If we named her Sweet-Pea would anyone take her seriously?
Why do we name our boys Cooper, Hunter, Forest, and Chase but not modern concepts like Broker, Plumber, Concrete or Vinyl?
Is a barrel maker (cooper) manlier than a plumber?
What about our dogs? Studies show that more people name their pets after people than we used to? Is that because we’ve elevated their function from subordinate companion to loving partner or child? When I tell people that Jack wants to eat, they assume I have a new boyfriend? If I say Gizmo wants to go out, they know I’m referring to my dog.
Funny how much a name invokes attitudes and responses, isn’t it? No deep thoughts today, just curious ponderings.
Happy Friday,
