Follow the Frass

July 17, 2009 – 8:19 am

Traipsing through my pole beans this morning I came upon this sight.  For those of who “not in the know,” this is frass (rhymes with grass) a.k.a. caterpillar waste.  Yes, an unpleasant topic before breakfast, but just the same there it was. Of course, even though I don’t enjoy finding this all over my leaves, as an organic gardener I used the discovery as an easy way to locate the culprits and remove them before they destroy my plants. After all, have you ever tried to find tiny green caterpillars on green leaves?  Any gardener worth their salt will tell you it’s a daunting task.  But real gardeners do what I do….they follow the frass.

How well they camouflage themselves

How well they camouflage themselves

And so that’s just what I did.  I located the little green guys and gently removed them, leaf and all, to the birdfeeder tray.

Of course, I did this during my morning meditation time so it became a source of deeper thought. As I worked, I realized this process could just as easily be applied to attitudes. Sometimes I go through my day in a foul mood, unaware of the fact that I’m leaving my own trail of “frass.”  Something irritates me early on and rather than seek out the source to accept, correct and release it, I let it pollute my entire day. But if I maintain an awareness from the start I am more likely to recognize it as it occurs, freeing myself and those in my wake.

Just for today, try to follow your own frass.  When something nasty or unkind comes out of your mouth, find the worm of thought behind it and get rid of it before it ruins your entire day.

Happy Day,

  3. Can you believe this is my third time to send you a note this a.m. Trish, this is indeed a positive way for each of us to begin each day. That way we will be more apt to apply it to a situation anytime of the day. Have a good day and a good weekend. Take care
