Spiders, wasps and humans

A Paper Wasp

A Paper Wasp

I sat on the porch this morning, coffee in hand, last night’s dreams swirling in my head when I had the sensation I was not alone.  About four inches from my face was a nocturnal spider ending her shift. Folding up her web for the day, she disappeared into the safety of the rafters to sleep until nightfall. As if on queue, a wasp immediately emerged from under the porch railing. It stretched its legs, opened and closed its wings and moved its head from side to side.

We stretched at the same time, making me laugh out loud. A thought emerged. Aside from ego, we are all the same, governed by our sense of light and darkness, restless to move and work, pulled by hunger or desire, weary after a long hard day.  We are easily satisfied and just as easily angered or entertained. Creatures of the earth, subject to the needs of our bodies.

Of course we are also more than that.  We are not just driven; we are aware that we are driven and can therefore discern needs from wants. And that, my friend, makes all the difference.

Happy Day,
