Bluebirds
July 29, 2009 – 7:57 amYesterday I had the delightful pleasure of visiting a bluebird nest in a friend’s front yard. For about an hour, I stood mesmerized by the sheer volume of work it took on the part of both parents to feed three nestlings. Over and over, male and female took turns bringing insects of all shapes and sizes: crickets, spiders, wasps, worms, beetles and any other bug they could catch.
Oddly enough, during the entire process, a family of house finches hovered nearby. Jerry and I hypothesized that perhaps they were trying to get a free meal, maybe hoping that the parents would mistake them for their own and slip them a free insect treat. Whatever their intent, I had to admire their dogged persistence and the absolute nonchalant attitude of the bluebirds. No matter how much they were pestered, neither strayed from their task at hand.
Perhaps that was the real lesson of the experience. When you are fully aware of your purpose, nothing can distract you, not nagging naysayers, nor passive observers, nor curious instigators.
Happy Day,

Hi there, I love this peice on the bluebirds. For two seasons now we have had bluebirds. This year, instead of the pair of bluebirds making there nest in the bluebird house, they instead made their nest in a decorative redbird house that we had hung in a tree for color. It was neat to watch them fly in and out to feed their young ones. I believe it was a titmouse family that had moved in the bluebird house.
