Fruit flies in waiting

Fruit flies in waiting

While photographing a beautiful bumblebee hanging inside my luffa gourd flowers I noticed that several fruit flies were lined up along one of the petals as if waiting their turn.  The little kid in me imagined a conversation between the flies.

“Big bully. Why does she always get the best nectar first?”

“Well….she is a hundred times our size.”

“It’s not fair.”

“Maybe it’s not…but we could go to the other fifty flowers instead.”

“I’m not budging. If she’s here it must be good. I want this flower. Let’s gang up on her.”

And so it went.

The whole scene reminded me of how often I do this myself. Maybe you do it too, assume that what the big guys like is more valuable than other things. You know, like when you check to see what Lou Dobbs thinks of an issue, or perhaps Glenn Beck or Bill Mauer.  Do you read what Oprah recommends? Do you dress like Gwen Stefani? Do you arrange your home like Martha Steward?

Let’s face it.  We all do this to some degree.  The problem is when we lose ourselves in the equation.  Just for today, try to ask yourself what you like, outside of what we’re told to like.  You may just be surprised to discover that what you thought you liked were really just adopted theories based on the media’s insidious influence.

Food for thought.

Happy day,
