The year of the Tiger officially starts 02/15/2010

As I stumble into the kitchen this morning to start the Collard Green broth and soak the field peas, I cannot help but think back on all of the holiday meals that I have prepared over the years.  Easter ham, Christmas goose, Thanksgiving turkey and today’s Pork with sauerkraut.  But wait, I am a vegetarian.  Have been for 17 years now.  So why is it that I still think in terms of meat, starch, vegetable when preparing meals for friends?

Perhaps it’s because I live among omnivores and create meals that all will enjoy. But maybe it’s because old paradigms are just that hard to shake.  We all know that human thoughts are formed by repeated experiences in our formative years so by the time we get to adulthood, those cerebral-electric highways are well worn.  And just like driving, we like to take the easiest route in our thinking.

But this year, I am making a pledge to myself to take the more scenic route.  To seek out new and unfamiliar territory. After all, this will be the year of the tiger.  What better time to delve into the jungle, to observe long and hard before acting, to embrace the unknown?

As we move forward together this year, I will be sharing new ways of thinking and behaving along the roads less traveled.  A brave adventure!

Happy day,
