Everyday miracles
September 21, 2008 – 8:42 amWalking near the pond this morning my eye was drawn upward to this tiny miracle of nature. It is a row of Green Lacewing eggs attached to a dried pine needle. The Green Lacewing (Chrysoperla rufilabris) is what is known as a beneficial insect because their larva prey upon “the bad guys,” aphids, spider mites, white flies, and other plant pests. Seeing the eggs all lined up in a row was a thing of beauty. So tiny, so fragile and yet full of life’s potential all wrapped in this miniature package.
It got me thinking about small miracles. They happen every day if you are keen enough to take notice. They are evident in the laughter of the chickadees, and the taste of a fresh picked tomato, in the reflection of the blue sky on the water and the sweet smell of a newborn baby. For some of us, they take the form of a kind word said at just the moment we need to hear it, or the unexpected arrival of a letter from afar. In my world, miracles happen all the time. It is me who cannot always see them.
Helen Keller was once asked if there is anything worse than being blind. Her answer, “It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision.” Today I hope that you will see with your heart rather than your mind. Experience the joy of this beautiful day and find comfort in everyday miracles.

I don’t believe in miracles, but I do believe in the miraculous, like tiny eggs on a pine needle. Your photos and comments help me be more mindful.
