Life in Black and White
October 6, 2008 – 9:15 amOver the weekend I watched this little bird. As I observed it closely, I noticed that it had no other colors at all, only black and white. It got me thinking about the statements we humans sometimes use. It’s either black or it’s white. It’s all there in black and white. There are many shades of gray. At the same time I was holding these thoughts, Congress was busy passing the Recovery Act in black and white. But even I know that it holds many shades of gray.
I wrote three pages of text on the Act before I erased it because you do not need to hear another talking head. What I believe we all need now is realism and creative optimism, not bellyaching. So rather than give you my money monologue, I offer you these thoughts.
- What we think about we create. What we give to the universe we get back.
- Before we had government, we still knew the difference between right and wrong and acted appropriately.
- Before we had Corporate America, we had hard working Americans. We still have hard working Americans.
- Before we had occupations, we had skills. We still have skills.
- Before we had consumerism, we had fair trade between individuals. We still have the opportunity for fair exchange.
- Before we had credit cards, we had credit between individuals. Your word was your honor. It can still be so.
- Einstein said “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”
We are not what the bank tells us we are worth. We are who we were made to be: loving, giving individuals. Perhaps these are days that will allow us to remember who we are.
